Add-On Endorsements — Reading

An add-on endorsement that truly makes a difference!

Literacy changes people’s lives. Many adults can point to a book that changed their career path or enabled them to see an issue differently. Young readers attest to books that saved their lives and gave them hope during bleak times. There is nothing more powerful or transformative than literacy. If you are looking for an endorsement that can be life changing and enable you to reach your students with effective, cutting edge literacy practices, then WSU’s online reading endorsement is for you.

We offer an affordable and convenient Washington State-approved reading endorsement that is fully online through WSU’s Global Campus. The program includes 6 classes (for a total of 19 credits) that are offered in a 2-year rotation. You can complete this endorsement from the convenience of your home no matter where you live. The content in each course can be applied immediately to your classroom and will expand your skills and strategies in literacy. A reading endorsement will make you highly qualified to teach literacy in K-12 classrooms and become a reading specialist.

After successfully completing our program you should be ready to pass the NES reading test.

Our program has two options:

  1. Master’s degree with endorsement: For students who want complete a master’s degree and take reading endorsement classes that apply to the degree.
  2. Add-on endorsement: For students who already have a master’s degree and only want to add an endorsement.

Application Procedures:

  1. Complete the College of Education add-on endorsement application
  2. Apply to the WSU Graduate School as a non-degree seeking student if completing the endorsement only. Apply as a degree-seeking student if planning to complete a master’s degree in addition to the endorsement.

Classes, Credits and Scheduling:

There are a total of 6 classes or 19 credits for the WSU reading endorsement. Courses are offered in a 2-year rotation and are fully online. Students can begin courses any semester.

Why Choose WSU?

They said it!

“My Masters of Education in Literacy helped me become an outstanding educator. Classes like Psychology of Reading and Literacy in the Disciplines gave me the skills to assist my students in reading and writing. I never would have had success without the knowledge I attained from WSU and its wonderfully talented and caring professors.” — Miranda Gardner

We said it!
  • Our class sizes are small, with approximately 15 students, and are offered fully online to allow maximum flexibility for working teachers.
  • Students can access the lessons and complete assignments at their convenience. There usually is no designated time that students need to be online in a given week. You can take your classes at your current location with DSL high-speed internet connection.
  • Our classes are taught by faculty with K-12 teaching experience who are active in literacy research and professional literacy organizations. No adjuncts teach our courses. In fact, the literacy faculty boasts more than 50 years of teaching experience in various public schools.
  • The program is hands-on enabling students to complete small projects or assignments. Faculty will work with you if you do not have classroom access. Our program does not have an internship or practicum because students have already completed a practicum in their undergraduate degree.
  • We may accept 6 transfer credits (2 graduate classes). This is case-by-case and current syllabi of the courses are required and courses must have been taken in the last 10 years.
  • The WSU reading endorsement is designed to meet state competencies and national literacy standards. It is accredited by the Professional Educator Standards Board.

We look forward to having you as a student! We want you to be successful and we are here to help you. Please email us with your questions, and we will respond promptly.
