Teacher Education – Elementary Education minimum requirements

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

Minimum requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Program.

  1. 80 Hours Requirement
    • 60 teaching hours: These hours must be recent educational experience with ages 4 – adult in a teaching capacity. Hours can be paid or volunteer. Experiences must be within the last 3 years (at the time of application to program).
    • 20 hours cultural hours: These hours we want you to be working with or learning about people from diverse populations and/or attend cultural events surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion. Experiences must be within the last 3 years (at the time of application to the program).
    • It is highly recommended that at least half of your hours are served with the age group you plan to teach.
    • Babysitting, serving as a nanny, or Big Brother/Sister cannot be used to fulfill this requirement.
  2. Attempt a basic skills test: West-B, SAT, ACT, or equivalent approved test in Reading, Writing and Math. If your scores are not in the passing range (below), specific program coursework can fulfil the requirement. All coursework used to meet the basic skills requirements must be with a C or better.
    • SAT: Reading-500; Math -515; Writing-490 (prior to 3/2016) OR Reading–27; Math–27.5; Writing-28 (after 3/2016)
    • ACT: Reading-22; Math-22; Writing-8 (2/2005-8/2105) or Writing-23 (after 9/2015)
    • If the West-B is necessary, you can register for the test online.
  3. Earn a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.50.
  4. Complete 45 semester hours of course work including:
    • English 101 and 201, 301, or 402, grade of ‘C’ or better or an equivalent composition course.
    • TCH_LRN 301: Learning and Development, with a grade of ‘C’ or better
    • HD 101: Human Development Across the Lifespan, with a grade of ‘C’ or better
    • MATH 251: Math for Elementary Teachers I, with a grade of ‘C’ or better
    • Three of the four required sciences, with a grade of ‘C’ or better (you do have to complete all 4 sciences)
  5. Group Interview
  6. Application to program. Applications are due by September 30th for spring admission and February 28th for fall admission

Important Dates:

August 30 & January 31: The application will be live on our website.
October & March: Interviews
December & May: Admissions Committee will meet and decide who will be admitted.
