Principal Program Internship Planning Process

Candidate interns develop an internship plan supported by programmatic Form B, a self-assessment form; Form C, a Log of Hours form; and Form E, a final assessment form (all found in the program handbook).
Process:

  1. The intern participates in an orientation meeting. The programmatic forms are explained, and candidates are assigned to complete a self-assessment form (Form B) based on the NELP standards. Candidates are also asked to have their site-based mentor complete Form B based on their assessment of the intern.
  2. The intern and site-based mentor meet to discuss the results of completing Form B. For example, as they review Form B, what similarities and differences do they see in their assessments? Based on their discussion of their individual Form Bs, the intern and site-based mentor then jointly complete a Form B. This jointly completed Form B becomes part of the intern’s Portfolio. The areas identified as needing growth set the baseline internship plan for the candidate.
  3. The intern and field supervisor meet to discuss the candidate’s baseline evaluation. They also discuss potential Task projects and other internship activities to gain experience in the areas rated as areas of growth.
  4. All three (Interns, site-based mentor, and field supervisor) meet to establish the start of the internship plan. The team reviews the results of this assessment process, and the NELP standards, other programmatic requirements, and the WCEAP Common Performance Tasks. At this meeting, the field supervisor introduces Form E, the final assessment. The field supervisor explains how the intern will transfer the information learned from completing Form B to Form E (Form B [pre] and Form E [post]). From this point forward, Form E will guide the intern’s activities and projects to ensure the intern has experiences across all the NELP and WA State standards.

Additionally, the field supervisor facilitates other programmatic requirements, such as a regular meeting schedule between the site-based mentor and the intern candidate. The team reviews the internship log sheet (Form C), which the field supervisor reviews monthly to ensure that the meetings occur as planned.
  5. Monthly Team Meetings. The team (intern candidate, site-based mentor, and field supervisor) meets at least once a month, to review the log of hours form (Form C) and the final assessment progress (Form E), and discuss how the intern’s experiences are occurring. This helps to ensure that the intern is getting to experience all the NELP and WA State standards. Most importantly, the discussion about the intern candidate demonstrating growth in the designated areas on Form B throughout the field experience.
  6. Regular intern candidate documentation. The intern candidate continually updates their log of hours (Form C) and their final assessment (Form E) and submits them via Canvas for the field supervisor to review once a month.
  7. As the intern candidate completes each WSU academic term, the field supervisor reviews their log of hours (Form C) and the final assessment (Form E), where they keep a running log of their experiences across all the NELP and WA State standards. This allows for continuous updates and regular, ongoing actionable feedback as they complete their internship hours.
  8. Candidate Portfolio Submission. Intern candidates submit Form B, Form E, and their log of hours (Form C) for their portfolio.
  9. Intern candidates complete the PESB Professional Growth Plan using their data from Form E (the final assessment form) to help them select their goals after program completion.
